Welcome to On Target. I am glad you found your way here.
Shooting has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I began competing when I was young, and some of my earliest lessons in patience, discipline, confidence, and perseverance came from a firing line.
Over the years, shooting took me to matches, introduced me to wonderful people, and gave me opportunities to compete internationally. It became part of how I understood myself.
Then life changed.
Work, family, responsibilities, and the usual turns of adulthood shifted where competition fit. I never stopped being a shooter, but for a while, that part of my life became quieter.
Eventually, I found my way back.
These days, muzzleloading is where my heart is.
I love the history and craftsmanship. I love the deliberate pace. I love that every shot begins with a process, and that the process matters just as much as the moment the trigger breaks.
There is something about black powder, old rifles, careful loading, and a good day on the range that feels like coming home.
But I have never stopped being curious.
I also shoot service rifle and small bore, and I have been branching out into trap, sporting clays, and action pistol. I like being a beginner again sometimes. I like discovering which lessons carry from one discipline to another and which ones make me rethink what I thought I knew.
That is really what On Target is about.
It is a place for the shooting itself, certainly, but also for everything that surrounds it.
The people.
The places.
The travel.
The matches.
The equipment.
The traditions.
The lessons.
The good days and the frustrating ones.
The moments when something finally clicks.
And the moments when it absolutely does not.
You will find muzzleloading at the heart of this blog, because that is where my own heart is. But there will also be room for the other disciplines I shoot, the things I am learning, and the places this journey may take me next.
Some pieces will be practical.
Some will be stories.
Some will be about becoming a better shooter.
Others may have very little to do with score.
Because the longer I shoot, the more I realize that some of the best lessons from the range tend to follow you home.
Patience matters.
Preparation matters.
Humility matters.
So does perseverance.
You miss. You adjust. You try again.
You keep going.
I suppose that is part of why I wanted to write all of this down.
On Target is a record of where I have been, what I am learning now, and what I still hope to become.
If some of it feels familiar to you, I hope you will stay awhile.
Maybe we will meet at the line.
Bye for now.
Clubs & Organizations
I’m proud to be involved with St. Lawrence Long Rifles, a Northern New York muzzleloading club dedicated to traditional shooting, competition, education, and fellowship. I currently serve as the club’s Secretary and enjoy helping support the matches, events, and community that keep the sport strong.
I also serve as a New York State Field Representative for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting muzzleloading heritage, competition, education, and shooting sports.
